Costume Maintenance and Care

Keep in mind that this is a performance costume and not regular street wear.

As such this special garment requires careful attention to maintain its shape and condition.

Remember that each wearing of a costume is equivalent to many times that of one wearing of regular street clothing. When you consider how many times a dress is put on, exerted in, and removed at just one feis, you can see how this can add up.

While situations are rarely ideal in life, it is important to follow these recommendations as closely as possible.

Here are a few guidelines for its care:

The costume should be stored flat and it needs to breathe as it is stored.

Ideally, wrap it in a cotton sheet and store under your bed.

Hanging it will distort the heavy, stiffened skirt.

Carry your dress in a waterproof bag made especially for this purpose.

Make sure the bag is wide enough to accommodate the skirt.

Always wear your dress with dress shields in it and a crop top underneath.

Preventing it from getting perspiration on it is one of the best things you can do for it.

Keep it out of direct sunlight whenever possible.

Do not eat or drink while wearing your costume.

Take it off between dances and avoid sitting in it as much as possible.

Use great care in changing.

The zipper, especially, should be checked after each use as it is usually the first stress point to show wear.
